Bryant Squeaks Out Win Over Merrimack In Smithfield

Bryant played their first game since January 31st this afternoon as the Bulldogs took on the Merrimack College Warriors in Smithfield. This came after the Bulldogs had a player test positive for Covid-19 back on February 4th. So coming into Saturdays game with the Warriors, the Bulldogs only played two games over the last thirty five days.

“It was great to get back on the floor after we played two games in thirty-whatever days” said head coach Jared Grasso in post-game press conference. “So I knew there were going to be some bumps along the way today” added Grasso.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start as they missed their first five shots in the game. Then just over 4 minutes into the game, Michael Green hit a mid range jumper for the Bulldogs first made shot of the game.

“I thought we had some good stretches, especially late in the first half, early in the second half. It disrupted us late in the game” said Grasso. “Obviously in the last minute we kind of struggled with their pressure. That’s on me. I have to do a better job to get my guys prepared in those situations. We haven’t been those kind of pressure situations like that and that falls on me, not them” added Grasso.

Over the final 40 seconds, the Warriors went on a 6-0 run. That included 2 turnovers in the final 7 seconds of the game. One led to a quick 3 by Devin Jensen to make it a 60 to 58 game. Then after a timeout by the Bulldogs, Nathaniel Stokes turned the ball over and Devin Jensen got the steal and took a shot from over half court. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the ball fell well short of the basket and the Bulldogs came out with a 60 to 58 win.

Michael Green 3rd had a team high 16 points on 6 for 13 shooting from the field. He also played a team high 39 points in the win. He also game down with 3 rebounds and dished out 4 assists in the game.

What’s Next For The Bulldogs

The Bulldogs will continue their home and home series with the Warriors on Sunday afternoon up in North Andover. Considering this is the second game of their back to back when the Bulldogs only played 2 games over a five week period, this will be a huge test for the Bulldogs. I expect that head coach Jared Grasso will be using more of his bench after only using eight players on Saturday afternoon. Their conditioning will be an issues especially later on in the game.
