Celtics’ Jaylen Brown Hopes Others Will Join Him At George Floyd Protest

Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown has been outspoken in the past about violence and inequality, and most recently about the death of George Floyd, stating that “Police brutality is an act of terrorism.”
Well, now the well-educated Brown, who is the vice president of the NBA Players Association, has called on others to peacefully protest with him in Atlanta.
The 23-year-old Brown tweeted Saturday “don’t meet me there beat me there come walk with me bring your own signs” in reference to Atlanta.

The protests, as you may have heard, are in response to the death of Floyd, who was killed in Minneapolis by a police offer.
It’s prompted others around the sports world, like ex-Patriot assistant and current Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores to speak out as well.

Weston McKennie Demands ‘Justice For George Floyd’ During Bundesliga Game

Bundesliga soccer games don’t usually mix with United States social issues, but these are extraordinary times.
United States and Schalke 04 midfielder Weston McKennie wore an armband containing the message “Justice for George Floyd” Saturday during his German Bundesliga team’s game against Werder Bremen. McKennie, a 21-year-old Texas native, made the personalized addition to his Schalke uniform, having undoubtedly been following the events in the United States in the aftermath of Floyd’s killing by then-Minneapolis, Minn., police officer Derek Chauvin.

NBA Rumors: Celtics ‘Most Likely’ Will Offer Jayson Tatum Max Contract

Danny Ainge found a key piece of the Boston Celtics future with the No. 3 overall pick of Jayson Tatum in the 2017 NBA Draft.
Now, it seems Ainge is reportedly set to offer Tatum the max to keep him in Boston, to the pleasure of many Celtics fans. NBA Insider Brian Windhorst was on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” on Saturday and explained how the organization is “most likely” going to give Tatum a max contract “after this season ends.”
“If Jayson Tatum is the superstar that they envisioned when they began this whole rebuilding process when they traded Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce for all of those draft picks hoping to land a player like this, we could see ‘Glory Days’ for the Celtics again,” Windhorst said on ESPN, as transcribed by Bleacher Report.
“But it’s very much up in the air, and I’m gonna tell ya, they’re gonna have to pay him like it because after this season ends, he is going to get most likely a max contract. They’re going to bet that he becomes that player.”
The 22-year-old Tatum is set to earn $9.9 million during the upcoming 2020-21 season, the final on his rookie deal.
Tatum had showed NBA superstar potential prior to the league suspending its season due to the coronavirus in March. The Duke product was named an NBA All-Star team for the first time and earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Month in February.
He averaged 23.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and shot 39.8 percent from three-point range prior to the break, proving Ainge and the Celtics would be wise to keep him around.

Celebrate Manny Ramirez’s Birthday With Ex-Red Sox Slugger’s Highlights

Would anyone be surprised if Manny Ramirez is getting better with age?
The former Boston Red Sox slugger turns 48 on Saturday, presenting the perfect opportunity to revisit some of the finest moments of his Major League Baseball career. After spending his first seven-plus seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Ramirez joined the Red Sox prior to the 2001 season and delivered on the great fanfare his signing on a mammoth contract prompted. He immediately demonstrated why he was among the most feared batters of his generation, by winning the American League batting title in 2002, and the AL home-run crown in 2004.
However, Ramirez’s exploits in the 2004 World Series helped end the club’s championship drought after 86 years, earned him MVP honors in that year’s Fall Classic and confirmed him as a Boston sports legend.

Throughout it all, Ramirez was one of Boston’s most charismatic characters, giving rise to the phrase “Manny being Manny.”

The Red Sox traded Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, and his MLB career lasted until 2011.
He told The Taiwan Times last month he’s eyeing a baseball comeback in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, and his former agent says Ramirez “hasn’t lost his touch.”
And we believe him.

MLSPA Approves Return To Play Plan According To Reports

According to Sam Stejskal and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, the MLSPA approved a return to play plan for an MLS tournament in Orlando. That plan will now be sent to MLS who will either accept the MLSPA proposal or counter the plan.

Their plan calls for players to fly to Orlando on June 24th where they would train for two weeks in preparation for a three-match group stage followed by knockout rounds. If a team gets knocked out they will fly back to their home market. In total the plan states teams will be in Orlando for a maximum of six weeks.

So let’s lay this out. Two weeks from June 24th would have a tournament start date of July 1st. A team that lasts until the final of the tournament would be in Orlando until August 6th. In theory, a team could play a minimum of four games and then be sent home with no clear plan of whether or not more games will follow. To be clear, this is a short term solution for MLS. If MLS decided to jump into a regular-season regional type format where teams play in their home venues following the tournament the timeline of that is complex.

Say the tournament ends on August 6th, when could MLS start to play games again following that, or do they call it quits on 2020? A lot of uncertainty and what compounds that is MLS asking players to have a one-year delay on the revenue share portion of the new CBA, a give-up the MLSPA is reportedly not willing to accept.

A lot still up in the air on MLS’s return, I would just like the call-out that the tournament is just a first step in a return and should not be the final form of MLS in 2020. Hopefully, a longer-term plan comes into place to give fans a little bit more substance.
