On Friday night at Agganis Arena, the Providence College Friars hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with Boston University. This was game one of a home-and-home series between Boston and Providence with game two at Schnieder Arena on Saturday.
BU took the lead a few minutes into the second period with a goal from Trevor Zegras. But PC was quick to respond. Less than two minutes later Greg Printz was able to find the equalizer. Printz wasn’t done just yet however as he scored his NCAA leading ninth goal just a few minutes later to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.
Before the second period came to a conclusion Providence was able to open up to a 3-1 lead with Patrick Moynihan hitting a one-timer into the back of the net in the 18th minute of the period.
Unfortunately for PC, their luck would turn. Boston scored two unanswered goals in the third period to tie the game and come away with a draw. Part of Providence’s problem this season has been the shots on the net they have allowed. Goaltender Michael Lackey has been strong between the pipes but has been peppered with shots. On Friday night Lackey made 35 (!) saves on 38 shots on goal. Lackey has now faced 30 or more shots in four straight games and has made 30+ saves in three straight games. Providence’s saving grace has been it’s explosive offense outscoring opponents 35-19 through nine games.
Another note on PC is the continued success of sophomore Jack Dugan. Dugan on Friday night picked up two assists to continue to lead NCAA in points this season with 20 in just nine games played.
Providence is back in action on Saturday night when they host Boston University. The game will be broadcasted regionally on NESN at 7 pm est… Big game on deck with the Friars sitting in a tie for third place in Hockey East with BU with both programs having five points on the year.
