New England Patriots vs. New York Giants Post Huge Ratings as NFL Thursday Night Football Continues to Grow
While the product on the field has been less than ideal for the NFL’s Thursday night football product the ratings haven’t suffered one bit. In fact, the ratings for the leagues Thursday night offering are up 14% season to date over last season.
This past Thursday when the New England Patriots hosted the New York Giants the combined viewership of the game was 16.8 million, +9% over the same week last season and +13% versus the average of last season. New England’s victory over the Giants posted a 9.5 household rating. In terms of digital streaming Amazon and Twitch were able to record 2.9 million viewers.
Season to date viewership for the Thursday Night Football product is averaging 16.8 million meaning the Patriots-Giants game came in right on point with the previous five weeks of action. It will be interesting to see what the NFL does next season as several of their Thursday Night Football games will have to go head-to-head with 2020 Presidential Debates.
Back in the last election NFL television ratings took a decent hit in windows where they matched up with a debate. It is unclear what the NFL’s plans are for 2020, potentially just an NFL Network type of game with streaming partners tacked on. Could also see some scheduling magic done to avoid having a marquee matchup shown in those broadcasts as well.
